Adolf Dassler originally established a company in his mother's house after returning from service in World War I. He was joined in 1924 by his older brother Rudolf, and they named the company Gebrüder Dassler Schuhfabrik (Dassler Brothers Shoe Factory). In 1949, after an acrimonious split, Rudolf left to form Puma and Adolf renamed his company Adidas.
